The
1919 World Series was between the
Chicago White Sox and the
Cincinnati Reds, and was the first World Series played after the end of World War I. The Reds were led by their star pitcher, Dutch Ruether, while the White Sox were led by their star hitter, Shoeless Joe Jackson. In the end, the Reds emerged victorious in the best-of-nine series, winning five games to three. The Reds had a strong pitching staff, led by Ruether, who won two games in the series, and the White Sox were unable to keep up with their powerful offense. The Reds' victory was the first championship for the city of
Cincinnati since 1882, and it was the first World Series victory for the franchise.
